Jobless claims surge to a 16-year high

The U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday that initial filings for state jobless benefits increased by 27,000 to 542,000 for the week ended Nov. 15. This marks the third time since 1992 that initial claims have exceeded 500,000.

Illinois sheriff stops foreclosure evictions

An outraged sheriff in Illinois who refuses to evict “innocent” renters from foreclosed homes criticized mortgage companies Thursday and said the law should protect victims of the mortgage meltdown.

Nurses Drive for Healthcare Voters

Find out how nurses grade the Presidential candidates’ healthcare proposals and how we can create a health care system that guarantees top-quality healthcare for all.  The event will be at Public Square in Wilkes-Barre on October 29th, from 4 to 5 p.m.

Registered nurse activists have launched a drive across country to make sure that voters have the
information they need to be informed about the presidential candidates’ health care proposals.

Riding the bus will are nurses, physicians, patients, healthcare activists, and Donna Smith, a star of
the movie SiCKO.

In Wilkes-Barre, the bus riders will join local nurses in the town square to distribute leaflets and talk to the public about healthcare reform.
